Ipanema beach in Rio De Janeiro owes part of its fame to the bossa-nova tune and worldwide hit The Girl Of Ipanema, which has been performed by many many different artists over the past 50 years. If you are planning to lie down on the golden sand of Ipanema beach, you might want to be in what is known as the coolest and trendiest part: Posto 9. This is where different urban tribes meet: creatives, intellectuals, alternatives and so on…
Definitely one of the most colorful and dynamic areas of Ipanema beach, the Posto 9 beach vendors are a true local attraction.
You are sleeping in the sun? Sooner or later you’ll be awakened by a piercing cry “Aaabacashi!” (pineapple in Portuguese) from right behind your head. You want to eat something? Donna Helena (a.k.a. “la Bahiana”) will bring you her “sanduiche naturao”. You can also buy sunscreen (not by the bottle but by the dose), you can get a massage from Tigrino or one of his colleagues, have a haircut, drink a Caipirinha, discuss a sightseeing tour, order a coconut, eat a fruit salad or a slice of watermelon, chose a bijou with an image of any of a host of saints, buy bathing suits, sun glasses, earrings, cookies, have your manicure done, a temporary tattoo….

Legends of Donna Helena’s profits abound: some say that she bought three houses in Rio De Janeiro, others a condo in Miami… most probably she lives in a favela like most of the beach vendors.
